The benefits of having a roommate

And folks, there's more benefits than just having someone to split the cost of utilities with.

When the roommate is a fellow blogger, I merely have to link to stories instead of typing them up for myself! Exhibit A: The Tale of The Weekend of the Parents in the Station of the College.

So thanks, Amy, for being a time and money saver.

Are there no rules of engagement?

That was a hypothetical question. Rant starting.

I was sitting in the rocking chair on our lovely front porch a la Miss DuBose this morning (To Kill A Mockingbird reference for all you illiterate people out there)... sans the Confederate pistol under her shawl... and a shawl.

Mosquitoes were out in full force! At 9:00am!! What the heck?! That is all kinds of disrespectful. Pesky mosquitoes should know their place. Their place is in the swamplands. Near brackish water. At your picnic when it is July and you have citronella candles and OFF! bug spray in bulk. This is APRIL!!! In the MORNING!! During a drought!! How rude.

And from wikipedia:

Mosquitoes prefer some people over others. The preferential victim's sweat simply smells better than others because of the proportions of the carbon dioxide, octenol and other compounds that make up body odor.

How droll. I'm flattered. Really.

Rant over, along with my time on the front porch.

Unsuccessful Attempt to be Still...or How Not to Make a Good Impression on the Neighbor.

So I really get the whole Ecclesiastes 11:6 idleness thing:

6 Sow your seed in the morning,
and at evening let your hands not be idle,
for you do not know which will succeed,
whether this or that,
or whether both will do equally well.

I'm awesome at being not-idle. Not that I'm always running about doing good, but I have a tough time sitting around and doing nothing. Watching TV? I'm also hanging masks and doing my nails and preparing my taxes and cooking and reorganizing my dresser drawers. I have adopted Mom's refrain of "I haven't sat down all day." Yesterday was an epic failure in terms of idleness....or, um "being still," as it is sometimes more acceptable to say. I tried to lay out in the back yard to catch some rays (semi idle, right? Just laying there and letting the sun fry my skin..while catching up on current events via World Magazine and running through the afternoon's to-do list and...well, you get the idea). Enter stage right: the alley neighbor's dog started yapping, and if it's one thing I don't like, it's yapping alley neighbor dogs. I wavered in and out of alertness after abandoning magazine and opting for a nap, and know for a fact that I yelled repeatedly (and in a very exasperated voice), "shut up shut up SHUT UPPPPP, DOGGGG!!! GOSH!!!" to no avail. The yapping continued, then I heard a guy saying calmly, "hey boy, let's keep it down, alright?" or something equally mousy (when compared to MY angry yelps). And now I'm too embarrassed to go out the back door for fear of aforementioned calm neighbor boy seeing me and confirming that I'm Cruella de Ville in the flesh.

Good thing there's a front porch. Maybe the dude won't recognize me if/when I ever see him again.

Harriet Elephante

Amy now has a blog. And she is paying me (in homecooked meals) to give a shout-out to it.

http://harrietelephante.blogspot.com/

There are some of my (not so) epic quotes along the right side of the page. There are not yet any posts on this supposed blog of hers, but expect. great. things. She's a clever one, she is.

Now where is my hot meal?!

Missing DC (part 1)

I got up early this morning to watch the Global Prayer Gathering 2011 online (you should too! It's almost over, so hurry! http://gpgonline.ijm.org/), and am mega-missing the stellar team I was so fortunate to work with for 2 years. If only I could move the entire headquarters to Austin....

Anyway, just a little shout out to my peeps at IJM HQ in DC.... and especially the amazing production team for delivering GPG to those of us who couldn't make it to DC this year.

I miss y'all.
